Basildon Town Centre Safety Plan
Enhancing safety and perceptions of safety in Basildon New Town.
With the intent of forming a coherent and deliverable strategy for the whole town centre – and something upon which work can begin in the immediate term – the our Safety Plan for Basildon Town Centre sits in a very particular context and at a very particular moment in time. It was commissioned as a follow-on to a recent study on public realm lighting in the key pedestrian spaces of the town centre produced by Light Follows Behaviour (November 2024).
Among the recommendations in that report was the recommendation to look more broadly at issues of safety, and to look more broadly in area terms as well – beyond those main pedestrianised spaces and out in to the wider town centre and beyond. DK-CM’s Safety Plan aims to fulfil these recommendations, building on the good work already done. We have worked holistically with a group of experts in particular aspects of safety, have spoken to members of the public, the business community, the policy and key council stakeholders thanks to the Basildon New Future Advisory Board and associated Community Safety Summit, and have brought our own expertise in urban design, local economy and architecture to bear in order to develop a structured series of approaches that are ambitious yet deliverable.
Having explored the town for this commission, DK-CM widened the study area even further, to account for the large, variably challenging environment that surrounds the town centre in the form of a series of ‘ring road zone’ spaces. We feel it is crucial that safe and joyful routes through this ‘zone’ is fundamental to a town centre which is safe and which feels safer.
